Alternative Fox delivers a landmark release in the history of minimalism with a live
performance documented from one of the genre's key figures-Steve Reich. Recorded live
at Berkeley University in the 1970s (home also to key minimalism figures Terry Riley
and La Monte Young), this performance sees Reich deliver some of his now legendary
compositions, such as the shifting tape-loop experimentation of "My Name Is", whereby
vocals are cut up, looped and played at different speeds to create constantly shifting
combinations.

One of the strangest and most enigmatic groups in the history of rock'n'roll, Les
Rallizes Denudes, also known as Hadaka no Rallizes or Hadaka no Rarizu, were a Japanese
experimental rock band that is often cited as a pioneering force of the noise rock
movement. Inspired by the Velvet Underground and other groups employing prominent,
overamplified guitar, the band's music was typically based on repetitive rhythmic
patterns bolstered by Takeshi Mizutani's heavily distorted lead guitar, though the
poor sound quality of early demos apparently turned Mizutani away from studio rec.,
rendering much of their output in the form of live bootlegs, supplanted by the
occasional leaked studio demo. The two versions of "There's No Heaven Like Hell"
presented here were recorded on 1 April 1975 at Rallizes House in Fussa, a small
town to the west of Tokyo, joining Mizutani with keyboardist/guitarist Taisuke
Morishita's experimental group Be, originally known as Yellow. The first version
takes the form of an epic slow drone, featuring Mizutani on acid guitar, backed only
by Morishita's pulsating synthesizer lines; the second version is in full marathon
mode, an hour-long dirge that sees the spacey duo joined by drummer Shunichiro Shoda
and a plodding bassist in the latter portion.

Pharoah Sanders live at the Antibes Jazz Festival in Juan-les-Pins, July 21, 1968.
Pharoah Sanders' status began to rise upon joining John Coltrane's band in 1965, where
his discordant solos formed a strong contrast to Trane's more melodious sound, though
each player had a strong impact on the other's subsequent work. Following Coltrane's
untimely death in 1967, Sanders formed a quartet of his own with former Jazz Messengers
pianist Lonnie Liston Smith, bassist Norman 'Sirone' Jones of the Untraditional Jazz
Improvisational Team, and drummer Majeed Shabazz. For this blistering performance,
given at the Antibes Jazz Festival of 1968 and broadcast on French radio station WDR3,
the quartet moves through various Sanders free-jazz workouts, taking in 'Venus' from
the 'Tauhid' album and 'The Creator Has A Master Plan' from 'Karma' along the way,
with the rhythm section holding down the fort as Sanders blows himself into the
stratosphere.

SIDE D Improvisation

The concert staged by Terry Riley, Don Cherry and Karl Berger in Cologne, Germany
on February 23 1975 serves as a landmark of minimalist jazz. The album is comprised
of just three mega-length songs, with Riley in the driver's seat, Berger as a steady
accompaniment and Cherry passing through in fleeting melodic moments; final track
"Koln Improvisations" references the Indian musical and spiritual forms that were
so appealing to each musician; opening track "Descending Moonshine Dervishes" bridges
the psychedelic and minimalist realms and "Sunrise Of The Planetary Dream Collective"
is based on throbbing, repetitive keyboard and vibraphone patterns.

The Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist Joyce Silveira Moreno was born and raised
in the middle of Copacabana, a short beach stroll from the epicentre of the bossa nova
universe. Her father was a Dane that had settled in Brazil, but she was raised by her
mother and stepfather in a typical Portuguese-Brazilian household. Since her older
brother was friendly with leading lights of the bossa nova movement such as Roberto
Menescal and Eumir Deodato, she was steeped in the form at an early age and witnessed
its key evolution first-hand. At the age of 16 in 1964, she was taken to the studio by
Menescal to contribute to the coveted debut album by the mythical group Sambacana,
assembled to record the work of composer Pacifico Mascarenhas when the meagre budget
would not allow the vocalists he preferred. Knowing that a full-time career in music
was certainly not guaranteed, she began studying journalism in 1967, shortly before
her controversial song "Me Disseram" reached the finals of Rios second International
Song Competition. The following year, her self-titled debut album was released by
Philips, produced by Armando Pittigliani, with orchestration by Dorival Caymmi and
arrangements by Gaya; along with her own compositions, the album also featured songs
by her rising-star friends, including Caetano Veloso and Marcos Valle.

Dallas-born Roger Kynard Erickson, better known as Roky Erickson, is a legend of
psychedelic music and culture. Playing piano at five years old and guitar at ten,
he dropped out of high school in Austin shortly before graduating, since the school
dress code demanded short hair. In 1965, his group, The Spades, made an impact with
"We Sell Soul" and the following year, The 13 th Floor Elevators burst onto the scene
with debut album The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13 th Floor Elevators, but the bands
non-conformist attitude and open endorsement of drugs such as marijuana and LSD put
them in repeated conflict with the authorities.

Tenor saxophonist Eddie Harris is best-known for his composition 'Freedom Jazz Dance,
which Miles Davis brought to prominence in 1966, and for being a pioneer of the
electric saxophone, yet his career is long, distinguished and varied. His debut album
'Exodus Into Jazz,' was named for his jazz adaptation of the theme from the movie
'Exodus', a chart-topping smash hit which became the first jazz song to win a gold
disc. There were further jazz/film soundtrack explorations for Vee Jay and some
concept albums too, with 'Bossa Nova' being the most noteworthy of the bunch.
The Brazilian form had been gaining favour in the US thanks to 'Girl From Ipanema,
'yet Harris' LP was not a tokenistic stab at faddism; instead, Harris uses the form
as a launchpad for his own sterling solos, heard most enticingly on 'Cev Y Mar' and
on the dreamy opener 'Mima,' inspired by his young daughter, Lolita Marie. The stellar
backing is part of the picture too, the hand-picked musicians led by esteemed pianist
Lalo Schifrin (then still making a name for himself), with Coltrane/Monk bassist Art
Davis, Dizzy Gillespie drummer Chuck Lampkin and veteran guitarist Jimmy Raney
allowing Harris all the space he needs, yet never playing mere filler behind him.

Obscure Minnesota-based power trio Highway has a long and convoluted history.
In 1965, guitarist/vocalist Steve Murphy joined The Epicureans, a band formed from
the ashes of The Pacers and The Corsairs, both previously active in the town of
Fairmont, located southeast of the state capital, Minneapolis. The group issued
a couple of singles along the way (both on small independents, which unfortunately
failed to generate much interest), and ultimately morphed into Highway in 1972, then
with Murphy and fellow Epicureans Tim Messerli on keyboards and vocals, Tom Olson
on drums and John Goossen on bass. After opening for REO Speedwagon in Wisconsin,
Olson was replaced by Dan Cammarata and Goossen by Eric Bannister. The resultant
group's self-titled debut album was recorded at Westminster Studio, near Fort Dodge
in neighbouring Iowa, during a time when Highway was based in the tiny town of Ceylon,
Minnesota; privately pressed in only 500 copies, it has since become a highly sought
-after item for its unusual blend of melodic hard-rock lead guitar, psychedelic
garage rock and wistful, country-tinged blues rock. Although some fans and critics
have compared the group to Thin Lizzy and Wishbone Ash, primarily because of the
melodic and distortion-free lead guitar licks, the band has a sound all their own,
especially since all three members provide vocals, as well as fierce instrumental
licks, with furious drum rolls from Cammarata and Murphy and Bannister sometimes
playing the same notes in unison. Highway's membership did not remain static for
long and the group has since undergone further changes to yield the enduring Murphy
Brothers band, yet their sole LP remains the most prized testament of their long,
shifting tenure.

1970'S 'Thousands On A Raft', Pete Brown & Piblokto!'s debut album for Harvest, clocks
in at the hard-rock and experimental jazz edge of prog, as heard on the extended
instrumental interludes of 'Highland Song' and 'If They Could Only See Me Now'; in
contrast, Brown's poetic sensibilities drive esoteric numbers such as 'Got A Letter
From A Computer' and the closing title track.

comprised of six of Lacy's own compositions, the album saw Lacy supported by Alvin
Curran on piano and Frederic Rzewski on flugelhorn, synthesizer and percussion, the
pair both longstanding members of the experimental group Musica Elettronica Viva.

My Kind Of Blues' was recorded for the label in 1961 (just as Cooke was launching his
own SAR Records imprint), being a collection of show tunes and jazz standards,
delivered
in a soulful blues style by Cooke atop lush orchestration, arranged and conducted by
trumpete r and bandleader Sammy Lowe. Highlights include a soave version of Duke
Ellington's 'I'm Just A Lucky So And So,' a cool cut of 'Nobody Loves You When You're
Down And Out,' a stirring take of George Gerschwin's 'But Not For Me' and a lovely
rendition of Irving Berlin's 'The Song Is Ended.

The musician and spiritual seeker Alice Coltrane was much more than just John
Coltrane's second wife. One of the few harpists to feature prominently in jazz, she
was also a renowned pianist and composer and her interest in spiritual matters greatly
helped steer her husband deeper into Krishna consciousness, which had significant
bearing on his music, most notably evident on A Love Supreme (1965). This mesmerizing
performance, held at Carnegie Hall four years after John's untimely passing as part
of a benefit event for Swami Satchidananda's Integral Yoga Institute, comprised a
stunning and largely improvised rendition of Coltrane's "Africa," with Alice's subtle
piano and harp expressions excellently framed by the wailing saxes of Pharaoh Sanders
and Archie Shepp, Cecil McBee and Jimmy Garrison trading non-standard bass lines,
a dual drum onslaught from Clifford Jarvis and Ed Blackwell, along with members of
the Institute on harmonium and tamboura.

The finger-picking guitarist and blues enthusiast John Fahey enjoyed a long,
influential and distinguished career. Born in Washington DC in 1939 and raised in
Takoma Park, Maryland, he launched his own Takoma label to issue self-produced work
in the late 1950s and then delivered his master's theses on the blues of Charlie
Patton at UCLA. Then, while based in the radical town of Berkeley, California in
the San Francisco Bay area, began issuing filed recordings of forgotten blues legends,
such as Bukka White. With his own work, Fahey began borrowing from eastern elements
such as Indonesian gamelan and Tibetan vocal chanting, reflecting his interest in
esoteric eastern religion, as well as birdsong, animal calls, and other naturalistic
elements. This beautiful 1973 performance, delivered in the sleepy town of Sausalito,
California, comprises most of Fahey's Fare Forward Voyagers LP (1973), as well as
earlier material, including "Dance Of The Inhabitants Of The Palace Of King Philip
XIV Of Spain", from his 1964 release, Death Chants, Breakdowns and Military Waltzes.

'Sorcerers' is the group's debut, when Jan Dukes de Grey were still the duo of multi
-instrumentalists Derek Noy, the band's songwriter and lead vocalist, and Michael
Bairstow. The 18 songs of the album recorded in October 1969 show within a pure folk
style the subtle use of multiple instruments like guitars, woodwinds, brass, keyboards,
and percussion. Every song conjures up its own time and place, from the quiet pastoral
delights of '28th June, Village Song' to the urban pulse of 'City After 3.00 AM,' the
homage to the vast expanses of an idealized 'Texas,' and the Eastern promise of
'Turkish Time.' Moods shift dramatically from the anger-drenched 'M.S.S.' to the
medieval musings of 'Dragons' and the wonder of a 'Butterfly.' One of the most
brilliant acoustic experiments of folk-psych-prog rock ever.

Detroit-born trumpeter Donald Byrd was one of the most expressive players of the
instrument. Recording for leading jazz labels such as Savoy and Blue Note from the
late 50s, he collaborated with Cannonball Adderly, Lee Morgan, John Coltrane and
Herbie Hancock. The 1962 Blue Note release 'The Cat Walk' was a critical success;
most songs were written by pianist Duke Pearson, who makes crucial contribution,
along with understated drummer Philly Joe Jones, relaxed strolling bass from Laymon
Jackson, and rousing sax from longstanding collaborator, Pepper Adams.

Bass wizard Jaco Pastorius is considered one of the world's greatest masters of the
instrument. After playing with Pat Metheny and Paul Bley in the mid-'70s, he joined
Weather Report in 1976, remaining with them until 1982, when substance misuse and
mental health issues sparked a rupture. Live At Aurex was recorded during a maiden
voyage to Japan, undertaken with a 21-piece big band; the astounding recording
showcases his blinding bass skills, as well as the complex arrangements he oversaw
as band leader.

somehow, they folded by the autumn of 1971, with Cotton taking the horn section to
The Kinks for the 'Muswell Hillbillies' album. Includes 3 bonus tracks.

From 1983, Jarrett's trio featured drummer Jack DeJohnette and former Albert Ayler
collaborator Gary Peacock on bass and that version of the trio provides the chops
on this excellent performance given at Stockholm's Berwardhallen on 3 October 1989.

Percussionist Frank Ricotti played in the National Youth Orchestra and was rated
the UK's top vibraphonist during the late 1960s. In 1971, with guitarist Mike de
Albuquerque, he cut the multifaceted jazz album, 'First Wind', which alternated
between experimental rock-influenced jazz and thoughtful adaptations of work by
James Taylor, John Sebastian and Melanie Safka, with some surprising blues diversions
too, such as Albuquerque's 'Go Out And Get It.' However, Albuquerque soon joined ELO
as a bassist, putting an end to the duo.

Avant-garde giant Archie Shepp made an indelible contribution to experimental jazz.
Double-LP 'The Tradition' was recorded in Rome in 1977 for Horo Records with drummer
Clifford Jarvis and bassist Cameron Brown; the raucous 'Hooray For Mal' has shades
of be-bop, while Duke Ellington's 'Sophisticated Lady' is largely tackled by Shepp
on upright piano (with gorgeous soloing by Brown); 'Things Have Got To Change'
hearkens to Shepp's experience of the Pan-African Cultural Festival of Algiers of
1969 and Ellington's 'I Didn't Know About You' is relayed as a soft tenor ballad with
rough edges.

directorial debut of John Cassavetes, 'Shadows'. Much has been said about the
controversial relationship between these two masters. "The score encapsulates
Cassavetes' and Mingus's unique approaches to both improvisation and composition
in their respective media, illuminating the oppositional nature of jazz to mainstream
cultural production and the underbelly of race relations in 1950's America."

After playing with Mingus, Coltrane, Lady Day and Abbey Lincoln, inventive jazz
pianist Mal Waldron moved to Europe and first reached Japan in 1970, where he met
Idaho-born double-bassist Gary Peacock, who had played with Art Pepper, Bud Shank,
Bill Evans and free-jazz giant Albert Ayler before moving to Japan to study Zen
Buddhism. 'First Encounter', recorded in Tokyo in 1971 for French producer Herve
Bergerat, shows that the intense pairing was quite natural, the harmonic dissonance
of Waldron's 'She Walks In Beauty' contrasted by the up-tempo groove of Peacock's
'What's That'; future Native Son founder Hiroshi Murakami makes important
contribution on drums.

Synth wizard Ryuichi Sakamoto was a composer and arranger since the mid-'70s and
burst into the world's greater consciousness in Yellow Magic Orchestra. After working
on the 'Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence' soundtrack (and shortly before scoring 'The
Last Emperor'), Sakamoto became musical director on the 1987 anime project 'Royal
Space Force: The Wings Of Honneamise', a sci-fi drama set in an alternative world.
The film was seen as ground-breaking for its portrayal of human alienation and social
conformity, and Sakamoto's funky spacy synth soundtrack feels ground-breaking too.
This deluxe edition includes 4 bonus tracks and an exclusive full color 60x60cm
(24x24 inches) poster!
